Howie Mandel reveals heā€™s ā€˜incredibly medicatedā€™

Known to frequently utter, ā€œdonā€™t touch me!ā€ Howie Mandel shocked everyone in September 2023 as he tightly embraced Reba McEntire on the stage ofĀ The Voice.

The comedian, who has a debilitating fear of germs, gave into his excitement and couldnā€™t resist the magnetic pull of the country music star.

While in the spotlight, Mandel seems energetic and happy, but off screen, he explains heā€™s a ā€œscaredā€ man, who out of the spotlight prefers to live ā€œin the fetal position.ā€

And recently, he made a shocking confession, revealing how he manages the OCD that guides him to ā€œabsolute hell.ā€ Keep reading to learn more!

The nightmare of the global pandemic unleashed the inner germaphobe in many people, sensitizing the population to the dangers of contamination.

For many, that fear only lasted a couple of years but for others, the fear of germs is never-ending and debilitating.

There isnā€™t a waking moment of my life when ā€˜we could dieā€™ doesnā€™t come into my psyche,ā€ says Howie Mandel, who struggled with severe anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) since he was a child.

Speaking withPEOPLE , the 68-year-old TV personality explains the pandemic was especially triggering: ā€œBut the solace I would get would be the fact that everybody around me was okay. Itā€™s good to latch onto okay. But [during the pandemic] the whole world was not okay. And it was absolute hell.ā€

The Ā Mayo ClinicĀ describes OCD as a ā€œpattern of unwanted thoughts and fears known as obsessions. These obsessions lead you to do repetitive behaviors, also called compulsions. These obsessions and compulsions get in the way of daily activities and cause a lot of distress.ā€

ā€œIā€™m living in a nightmare,ā€ says the Canadian-born comic. ā€œI try to anchor myself. I have a beautiful family,ā€ says Mandel of wife Terry (married in 1980), and their three kids, Alex, Riley and Jackie. ā€œā€¦I love what I do. But at the same time, I can fall into a dark depression I canā€™t get out of.ā€

Laughter is the best medicine

Mandel, who in 1982 had his big break on the medical dramaĀ St. Elsewhere, explains every day is a struggle but his humor helps him through.

ā€œMy coping skill is finding the funny. If Iā€™m not laughing, then Iā€™m crying. And I still havenā€™t been that open about how dark and ugly it really gets.ā€

Noting that he uses comedy to resist the dangerous pull of OCD, Mandel adds, ā€œIā€™m most comfortable onstage. And when I donā€™t have anything to do, I turn inward, and thatā€™s not good.ā€

Bringing his unparalleled sense of humor to every project, Mandel always has something to do, like serving as a judge in theĀ Americaā€™s Got TalentĀ (AGT) franchise and hosting several other shows.

ā€˜Incredibly medicatedā€™

In 2022, he had a chat with Kelly Clarkson on an episode of her talk show and candidly spoke of his mental health issues.

ā€œIā€™m neurotic, I have OCDā€¦so people think that Iā€™m enjoying myself, and Iā€™m out and amongst peopleā€¦Iā€™m scared. I like to go home and just live in the fetal position,ā€ he told the host.

Surprised by Mandelā€™s alter ego who lives outside the spotlight, Clarkson replied, ā€œItā€™s so funny to me, because every time Iā€™m around you, even seeing you out of workā€¦youā€™re so the opposite of what I would think.ā€

ā€œI know, Iā€™m such a joy, Iā€™m a light, Iā€™m an energy, and Iā€™m stunning,ā€ Mandel joked. ā€œā€¦Iā€™ll be honest with you, Iā€™m incredibly medicated.ā€

Hugging Reba

That medication might have inspired his eagerness when seeing Reba McEntire on the stage ofĀ The Voice.

Leaping from the audience while calling her name, Mandel ran up to the country music maven ā€“ a panelist on the show ā€“ and said, ā€œWeā€™re right next door shooting theĀ AGTĀ finale. Would you sign my shirt?ā€

After she signed his ā€œI [heart] Rebaā€ shirt, Mandel shocked viewers when he tightly embraced McEntire.

ā€œYou donā€™t see that every day,ā€ the showā€™s presenter, Carson Daly said of the man who typically shies away from physical contact.

Acknowledging his puzzling behavior, Mandel says, ā€œPeople see inconsistencies, especially in the media. ā€˜Oh he hugged someoneā€™ or ā€˜he shook someoneā€™s hand.ā€™ I can shake your hand. But then Iā€™d think I didnā€™t wash it well enough. And Iā€™d go back and forth in a loop washing my hands for hours.ā€

Committed to keeping the conversation on mental health going, he continues, ā€œI understand the funny in that. But it doesnā€™t mean it isnā€™t incredibly painful. And I donā€™t want to defend my mental health. I just want to maintain it.ā€
